Gypsum recycling

Avoid landfilling of gypsum waste. Plasterboards/drywalls/wallboards are the principal wall materials used in the US and Europe. They are made of a sheet of gypsum covered on both sides with a paper linen. In total 80 million tons of plasterboard/wallboard/drywall is produced every year. Europe, US and Japan accounts for 85% of this. As most of it is still sent to landfill, this means that app. 15 mio tons of waste is being landfilled yearly, or more than 40.000 tons of waste every day. Our gypsum recycling system can change that.

Gypsum recycling is becoming a key source of raw materials for more and more plasterboard plants. Our gypsum recycling system counts the top 5 plasterboard companies in the world as customers. Plasterboard plants belonging to USG, BPB Group, Knauf, Lafarge Gypsum and National Gypsum participate in our gypsum recycling system and rely on us to supply them with high quality recycled plasterboard waste at prices below the price of virgin materials. We make gypsum recycling in 10 different countries in cooperation with among other these 5 leading plasterboard manufacturers.

Our gypsum recycling system benefits the environment, the construction and demolition industry and the manufacturers of the plasterboards.

The benefits to the environment of gypsum recycling:

Gypsum recycling means that waste that would otherwise have been disposed of in landfills now is being recycled and turned into a gypsum powder that the plasterboard manufacturers can use when making new boards. Not only does gypsum recycling thereby prevent waste from being deposited unnecessary in landfills to the benefit of the environment, but the use of scarce natural resources is also limited by the gypsum recycling, as the recycled waste will reduce the need for manufacturers to acquire natural gypsum resources. On top of that gypsum plasterboard waste in landfills under certain circumstances is known to cause hydrogen sulfite gasses, which potentially are lethal, and obviously by recycling gypsum waste instead such dangerous situations can be avoided.

The benefits to the construction and demolition industry of gypsum recycling:

For the construction and demolition contractors recycling gypsum waste means less costs, as we always offer gypsum recycling at a price below the price of disposal to landfills. As we on top of our gypsum recycling service also provide an entire collection and logistic solution, the construction and demolition contractors can leave everything to us: We will pick up the waste at the construction site, recycle it and deliver the powder to the plasterboard manufacturers. The only thing the construction and demolition contractors have to do, is to order our gypsum recycling service.

The benefits to the drywall manufacturers of gypsum recycling:

For the plasterboard manufacturers gypsum recycling also means less costs, as we always offer the recycled gypsum powder made from the gypsum recycling at a price that is below the price of other gypsum raw materials.

Company profile

Gypsum Recycling International is the mother company of the internationally operating Gypsum Recycling Group. Gypsum Recycling International is the first company worldwide to have implemented a complete and commercially based gypsum recycling system for recycling of all kinds of gypsum waste by converting the waste into a raw material for production of new gypsum boards.

The system was introduced in Denmark in 2001, and has since been expanded to cover new countries very quickly. Today we are active in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Ireland, UK and USA, and Japan will start next year.

Gypsum Recycling Internationals system provides benefits to all parties involved, and accordingly the basis of the system is common business sense rather than bans or regulations regarding landfilling of gypsum waste.

Significantly different

The system has a proven track record in several countries and has obtained the world record recycling rate of 65%, not just of new construction waste but also of demolition waste. We do not just claim we can make gypsum recycling happening, we are doing it every day in 7 countries. Nobody has more experience than us.

It is a complete system with all the necessary elements for efficiently taking the waste from the place of generation to the processing facility, where the waste very economically is transformed into a valuable raw material that cost efficiently is delivered to the gypsum board plant nearby. The system encompasses: a collection system/containers, a logistics system, the mobile recycling unit and end-users that can benefit from the recycled material.

The recycling unit is designed to be mobile and very compact. Hereby multiple small processing plants/facilities located close to where the waste is generated can be serviced using the same recycling unit. The recycling unit removes all types of contaminants from the recycled waste, no matter whether the waste is from new construction or demolition activity, assuring that any gypsum board manufacturer can use the produced powder and replace up to 25% of the raw materials needs with recycled gypsum powder made from gypsum waste.
