Recycling of gypsum wallboard

Recycling of gypsum wallboard is an activity that has been successfully implemented in ten countries over the last years by Gypsum Recycling International and is now being made available in the rest of the world. Take a look at our unique gypsum wallboard recycling system

A unique value creating system

The pressure to decrease landfilling of waste and instead take up recycling activities is increasing as the focus on climate changes is increasing. Fact is that landfilling of waste creates methane, which is 20 times more damaging to the climate than CO2. Recycling of gypsum wallboard can help reduce the creation of methane at the landfills. Gypsum Recycling International A/S has proven in several countries that gypsum wallboard recycling systems can be established in practice based on the new concept where all parties involved benefit from their participation. Our specially developed gypsum wallboard recycling system has been designed to optimise the entire process from collecting the waste to manufacturing new gypsum wallboards. The system consists of a unique and proprietary recycling technology, specially developed containers, a logistics system and users that benefit from the recycled materials.

The gypsum wallboard recycling unit

Gypsym Recycling International's recycling unit is designed to handle all kinds of gypsum wallboard waste, even waste that is not clean or pure. Most of the waste comes from:

  • New construction, where 10% of all wallboards used end up as waste, due to cut offs etc.
  • Reconstruction (where old walls, ceilings, floors are removed)
  • Demolition where the entire building is taken down
Demolition and reconstruction waste, which typically makes up 50% of the entire wallboard waste volume, is characterized by a great deal of contamination in the form of paint, wallpaper, nails and screws. Gypsum Recycling International has developed the wallboard recycling unit to deal exactly with such types of contaminations. Multiple sorting devices assure that none of these contaminants end up in the final product.
