Recycling of sheetrock
Gypsum Recycling International is the first company to have implemented a complete and commercially viable voluntary system for the recycling of sheetrock. We turn the waste into a gypsum powder which the sheetrock plants can use as raw material for the production of new sheetrock. The system with its patented technology is now implemented in 10 countries.Because of the worldwide interest in preserving the environment and limit greenhouse gases, recycling is a hot topic. A competitive system that enables recycling of sheetrock will prevent disposal of waste at landfills and thereby decrease the creation of the greenhouse gas, methane, which is 20 times more damaging to the climate than CO2.
On top of this, our unique sheetrock recycling technology is mobile, so that the recycling unit can be moved around from one processing facility to the next. This way the sheetrock waste does not have to be transported far, and the whole system becomes very competitive with landfilling.
About the sheetrock recycling system
Up until now it has been a widely accepted fact that the ability to handle wet waste is crucial for establishing sheetrock recycling systems, as the waste inevitably would get wet at some point from creation until it was reprocessed.
While it is true that the recycling unit for recycling of sheetrock should be able to handle wet waste if such is present, it is a conceptual mistake to design the system around handling wet sheetrock waste: if the system allows the waste to get wet, the end users will be paying for having water removed from their site, which obviously is not very economical. Secondly if the waste gets wet, the water absorbed must under all circumstances at some point be driven out again either by the recycling unit or at the sheetrock plant. It will always increase the cost of recycling to drive out this water.
Gypsum Recycling International’s concept is to avoid that the waste gets wet at all, because this will always be the most economical solution. Thus by having the special containers from Gypsum Recycling International with the top lids and transporting the sheetrock waste in covered trucks, we prevent the waste from getting wet in the first place!
