Wallboard

When a recycling system is relying on securing the end users lower cost for their wallboard waste disposal, the collection and transportation of the waste to the reprocessing facility is a key factor. Too high costs will make wallboard recycling economically uninteresting for the end users. It is therefore a necessity in profitable wallboard recycling to be very competitive on collection and transport of the waste.

A second key factor is that the wallboard industry will use the recycled gypsum powder. This is ensured by Gypsum Recycling International selling it at a price well below that of virgin gypsum raw materials.

The Scandinavian System

In Scandinavia the wallboard industry has been very supporting in getting the recycling system established. The companies have cooperated to increase the likelihood of success for the recycling efforts and they now benefit from this. They receive all the material that is made from recycling of wallboard waste, and the recycled materials now make up 20-25% of their raw materials usage.

It is our experience that chasing users outside the industry, as has been done in other wallboard recycling projects, is not the way to go. Gypsum Recycling International never believed in this approach as the natural users of the recycled gypsum materials is the plasterboard industry itself, and from an environmental point of view this is also where most value is preserved in the process. Nobody is better capable of using the recycled materials than the industry that produced the virgin materials.

Thus, supplying the recycled gypsum powder back to the industry has always been the cornerstone of the Scandinavian System and is in full accordance with the “cradle to grave principle” now adopted in more and more industries.
